About the Show

From Mischief, Broadway masters of comedy, comes the smash hit farce. Welcome to opening night of the Cornley University Drama Society’s newest production, The Murder at Haversham Manor, where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. This 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show—an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences! Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, this Olivier Award–winning comedy is a global phenomenon that’s guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter!

Audition Information

Note from the Director: A crucial thing to remember is that the actors of Cornley are setting out to tell the story of The Murder at Haversham Manor. Everything in the show must of course be played for truth and not for laughs or parody. For Cornley this show is not a comedy, it’s a serious play, and it is so important to them all that it goes well, so when it goes wrong it hurts. Without that solid structure to support the comedy, the show will unravel. It is also useful to remember that the actors of the Cornley Drama Society are not bad actors but the victims of unfortunate circumstances. The comedy comes from their unwavering endeavor to continue, their bad choices in trying to get out of the situations they find themselves in and their optimistic belief that their luck will change.

Important: This is a physically demanding show. Most roles will require varying amounts of crawling, climbing, lifting, running, and/or falling. There is also a sword fight and some hand-to-hand combat. Some actors will perform on a tall platform and some will be asked to stay in an enclosed (not locked) box for roughly 5 minutes. We will be working with a movement coach and a fight director to ensure all is done safely, properly, and respectfully. Please note that a few of these roles require some physical intimacy onstage, and TAP has hired an Intimacy Choreographer for this production.

TAP values diversity in race, physical ability, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background, age, and body type. Anyone who sees a little of themselves in one of these characters is welcome and warmly encouraged to audition. The creative team seeks a diverse company of adult actors. Actors of all ethnicities will be equally considered for all roles and actors of color are encouraged to audition. Age ranges for characters are flexible (18+) and will depend upon groupings and pairings found through auditions. There may be some gender flexibility for roles typically male-identified, TBD through the audition process.

All roles are open.

*If you are unable to attend auditions in-person auditions, but you can make it to callbacks in person (this is a hard requirement), please e-mail the producers, Steven Yates & Laura Gouge, at tptgw@thearlingtonplayers.org to request an exception to submit a video audition and receive instructions.

The Audition:

A list of characters can be found on the downloadable character list.

A comprehensive list of audition information and the audition form can be found on the downloadable audition form.

  • Please prepare one of the sides listed below. We will provide copies of the sides at your audition, and you may be asked to read more than one character’s lines. Please read with your best British dialect (see character descriptions for details – basically RP) for all roles but Annie and Trevor, understanding perfection is not expected, and there will be a dialect coach for the rehearsal process. A reader for scenes with multiple characters will be provided for auditionees to play off of.
  • You will also be taught a movement sequence. After learning the sequence you will perform it solo. Please bring appropriate shoes and clothes that you can easily move in, including floor work.
  • If you are going out for multiple roles, perform the side of your primary role preference (Auditionees will be considered for all roles unless they’ve indicated a strong preference otherwise).
